Biography

During her career Svetlana Varganova competed at two major international tournaments, the 1980 Olympics and 1982 World Championships, winning silver in the 200 breaststroke at the Olympics. At 1982 Worlds she won gold in the 200 breaststroke and bronze in the medley relay. Varganova also set one 200 metre breaststroke world record during her career, clocking 2:31.09 in 1979. Domestically, Varganova won one Soviet title, the 1982 100 breaststroke, adding two 200 breaststroke silver (1982-83) and two 200 m breaststroke bronze medals (1979, 1981) at the Soviet championships. After finishing her sporting career, Varganova worked as a swimming coach in her native Leningrad (now St. Petersburg).

Personal Best: 100 m breaststroke – 1:11.09 (1982); 200 m breaststroke – 2:28.82 (1982).
