Sue Woodstra played collegiate volleyball at Southern Cal, where she helped lead the Lady Trojans to the 1981 NCAA women’s volleyball championship. Woodstra competed on the US national team from 1978-84. She competed at the 1981 World Cup (fourth), the 1982 World Championships (bronze), the 1982 Roslock Tournament (gold), and the 1981 NORCECA Championship (gold). After the 1984 Olympic silver, Woodstra played four years professionally in Japan. She was a four-time US Volleyball Association (USVBA) Women’s Open first-team All-American (1975, 1985-87) and the 1986 USVBA Women’s Open Player-of-the-Year.
After her playing days ended, Woodstra became a college coach, serving as head coach at the University of Pittsburgh (1989-92) and UC Berkeley (1995-98). She led Pittsburgh to four consecutive conference championships and was named Big East Coach of the Year in 1990. After Berkeley she became head coach at Humboldt State University in California. She also served as assistant coach for the US Olympic women’s team at the 2008 Olympics, leading them to a silver medal finish.
