Born into a fencing master’s family, Stefano Simoncelli was taught fencing by his father Cesare from the time he was 10-years-old. Simoncelli was one of the top Italian foil fencers of the 1970s and won a team silver at the 1976 Olympics and team bronze at the 1975 World Championships. He was also individual Italian foil champion in 1972 and 1976. After his competitive career, Simoncelli continued his father’s work as a fencing master with Frascati Scherma. He later worked as a vice president of the Italian Fencing Federation and was the head of external relations with the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI). Simoncelli was also a contributor to the Italian sports magazine Diritto Sportivo. His children Luca and Marta also became an international class foil fencers.
