Biography

Sonya Klopfer was named after figure skating legend Sonja Henie. In 1950 Klopfer placed second in singles at the US Championships, qualifying for the World Championships, where she placed fifth. In 1951 she won the US Championship, and earned a bronze medal at Worlds, improving that in 1952 to a silver medal at the Worlds. After the 1952 Winter Olympics and World Championships, she turned professional, skating with the Ice Capades and Holiday on Ice, and winning the 1964 World Professional Championship. She also became a figure skating coach, numbering several Olympians among her pupils.
