Biography

Romualdas Murauskas rose to prominence in 1955, when he won a bronze at the Soviet Championships and was selected for the European Championship team. Murauskas did not perform well at the 1955 European Championships, though, losing his quarter-final match to East German Ulli Nitzschke. The next year was probably Murauskas's best, as he won his only Soviet title, was selected for the Soviet Olympic team and won Olympic bronze. In 1957, Murauskas competed again at the European Championships, but again without much success, losing his second round match to Andrzej Wojciechowski of Poland. Murauskas also won two more bronzes at the Soviet Championships in 1959 and 1960, was six times Lithuanian SSR champion (1954, 1956-1960) and won the Baltic Championships in 1960, before hanging up his gloves for good in 1961 with a record of 189 wins in 205 bouts.
