Biography

At both the Final Trials and the 1948 Olympics, Bob Cowell, a U.S. Navy ensign, finished second to Allen Stack in the backstroke event. Cowell won the 1946 NCAA 100y backstroke for the Naval Academy and was the AAU champ in the 100m outdoor in 1945 and the 150y indoors in 1947. He became a career naval officer before his early passing.
