A three-time Scottish 880y champion (1908-10), Robert Burton equaled the Scottish record of 1:58.8 in winning the event at the 1910 Scotland vs. Ireland match. The following month he became the sole holder of the record when he improved to 1:58.4. Burton never competed at the AAAs but gained Olympic selection by winning the Scottish Trials in 1912 (1:59.4), but he finished last in his heat at Stockholm. He was one of the first British athletes to experiment using oxygen while training.
