Biography

A native of Los Angeles, Richard Moore attended Los Angeles High School and UCLA, where he studied political science. He began sailing when he was befriended by Pierpont Davis, and Davis asked him to sail on his Olympic crew. Davis’s boat, the Santa Maria, finished second in the Final Olympic Trials, but the winner, Owen Churchill, graciously included the Davis crew on his Olympic crew, allowing everybody to sail in at least one race. Moore later attended Stanford Law School but did not finish. He was an engineering officer in the Pacific in World War II, and stayed in the US Naval Reserves as a battalion commander. After the War, he began a real estate career, and started his own company.
