Rainer Philipp, whose nickname was “Flipper”, is a former ice hockey forward, who played 13 years for VfL EC Bad Nauheim. before he moved to Kölner EC, playing there from 1979-85. He became West German Champion in 1983 and in 1984 together with his nephew Ralph Philipp, who died in a car crash preparing for the 1985 season. Since then their number “8,” which they both wore, has been retired. In 1976 Rainer Philipp played for the West German national team at the Winter Olympics, winning a bronze medal. In the German Premier League he played 717 matches and scored 454 goals, while earning 199 international caps with 90 goals for the national team. Philipp played in three consecutive Winter Olympics, seven World Championships, and was inducted into the German Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988.
