Although born in Ukraine, Pavel Stolbov grew up in Moscow, where he also took up gymnastics in 1947. During his career, Stolbov competed at four international tournaments. At the 1956 Olympics, he won gold in the team event. At the 1958 World Championships, Stolbov again won gold in the team event and also silver in pommelled horse and bronze in parallel bars. At the 1959 European Championships, Stolbov won gold at horizontal bar, silvers in individual all-around and rings and bronze on the parallel bars. At his last international tournament, the 1962 World Championships, Stolbov won silvers in the team event and horizontal bar. Domestically, Stolbov won the Soviet individual all-around title in 1957, the pommelled horse title in 1956, and horizontal bar titles in 1956, 1957, 1959, 1962 and 1963. Stolbov also won the 1959 Soviet Cup in individual all-around. After finishing his sporting career, Stolbov worked as gymnastics coach in Moscow and since the 1970s was also an international gymnastics judge. His wife Tamara was also a national level gymnast, who won two Soviet titles.
