Biography

Paavo Nuotio won the Finnish Ski Jumping Championship in three consecutive years, 1925-27, and again in 1932. He won the 1938 and 1939 seniors title, as well as the trial for the 1928 Winter Olympics. The following year he won two competitions in Switzerland, at St. Moritz and Davos. In Nordic combined, Nuotio was runner-up in the national trials behind Esko Järvinen, whom he was able to beat at the Olympics. His best placing in Nordic combined at the Holmenkollen was third. In addition to winter sports, Nuotio successfully played Pesäpallo, a local sport in Finland similar to baseball. With various teams, he won the Finnish Championship in 1925 and 1929-32. In 1933, he published the book Mäenlaskun opas (Ski Jump Guide).
