Ottavio Panunzi lost in the quarter-finals of the light-heavyweight class at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He came in as a medal favorite, having won the Military World Championship (CISM) from 1953-55. After the Olympics Panunzi turned professional, fighting his first pro bout in April 1957. He fought almost exclusively in Italy, with only his penultimate bout in München. Panunzi never fought for a major title, and retired in September 1963 with a professional career record of 25 wins (12 by KO) and 12 losses.
