Biography

Orde Ballantyne competed in the long jump at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Ballantyne won a gold medal at the 1981 CARIFTA (Caribbean Free Trade Association) Games in the shot put. He also competed at the 1987 World Indoor Championships in both the 60 metres and the long jump. Ballantyne competed in college at the University of Idaho in the United States.

Ballantyne later became an athletics coach, working with the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. At the Opening Ceremony he refused to stand for the US national anthem, stating that he did not stand for any national anthem except Saint Vincent’s. The National Olympic Committee of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines suspended him for four years for this refusal.
