Biography

Maxime Grousset was 16 when he left behind his family and native New Caledonia to pursue his dream of becoming a swimmer. He travelled 16,000 kilometres to the mainland to settle in Amiens, in the north of France.

"It wasn't a difficult question. At a given moment on an island like that, you have to leave, stand on your own two feet, and compete at the European level. I often called my parents to chat with them, to see them. It's especially the environment of Amiens in general and the group that made it warm and made me feel good," he told France TV.

Maxime Grousset: National and European success

Grousset started swimming at five, learning to navigate the South Pacific waters early on. After making a mark in the local club scene, his transition to Amiens in 2016 marked a turning point. Embracing weight training and rigorous physical preparation, his dedication paid off almost immediately.

A year after arriving on the French mainland, he won his first national title in the 4x100m freestyle relay and claimed world junior silver in the 50m freestyle. In 2018, he was part of France's victorous mixed 4x100m freestyle relay team at the European Championships in Glasgow.
