Biography

Max Rieger finished sixth in the giant slalom at the 1972 Sapporo Winter Games, and did not finish the slalom event. Prior to that, he had placed 20th in the 1968 Grenoble slalom event. Rieger won three West German national titles in 1969 (slalom) and 1971 (giant slalom and Alpine combined). At the 1970 Worlds he narrowly missed the podium twice, claiming two fourth places in the giant slalom and the Alpine combined. In 1973 he won his only World Cup race in Canada’s Mont Sainte-Anne in the giant slalom. Rieger later led a ski school in Mittenwald. He also became an accomplished golfer.
