As a child in school, Kiruhura quickly realised he was always the fastest. When his peers were more interested in football or music, he knew that his passion was athletics.
In 2013, he was forced to leave his home in the Democratic Republic of Congo due to instability and security concerns. He first lived in Uganda, where he managed to start training more seriously in Athletics. He started as a sprinter, but quickly began to realise his talent for longer distances. Despite this, life was very difficult for him in Uganda as he didn’t have any family or support system there.
As a fan of athletics, Kiruhura knew that some of the best long distance runners were in Kenya. He made the decision to pursue his sporting career in Kenya, where he took part in trials in Nairobi, and was accepted onto the Refugee Athlete Support programme.
Now that he is training with the best, he hopes to also become one of the best, with support from the IOC Refugee Athlete Scholarship as he attempts to be selected for the IOC Refugee Olympic Team Paris 2024.
