Katie WEATHERSTON

Ice hockey forward Katie Weatherston’s interest in the sport first came at the age of four, inspired by her older brothers. Her first experience with Canada’s national team, however, was on their under-19 soccer team in 2001 and the previous year had captured a national soccer championship with Team Ontario at the 2000 Canada Games. She took Thunder Bay to a provincial ice hockey championship in 2002, joined the under-22 team in 2003 and became a part of the women’s national team the following year, winning her first major gold medal at the 2004 Four Nations Cup. This was followed by two more in 2005 and 2007, as well as gold (2007) and silver (2008) at World Championships and a gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics, where Canada took the ice hockey tournament and Weatherston played in five games and scored four goals. She accomplished this despite suffering from several injuries during the season, including chronic ankle pain from her soccer days. She also spent four years on Dartmouth College’s ice hockey team while obtaining her Bachelor’s in psychology. In her final year, she was named Eastern College Athletic Conference’s Playoff MVP.

Weatherston is a certified elementary school teacher in Ontario and New Hampshire and speaks Italian. A Clean Air Champion, she also owns and teaches at Superior Edge Hockey School, which she founded in 2005 as an all-girls hockey school. She continues to play hockey with the Montreal Stars of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, and previously played for the Ottawa Capital Canucks of the same league.
