A stalwart of the British swimming team for a decade, June Croft won 24 national titles during her career. At the age of 17 she swam in three finals at the Moscow Olympic Games and won a silver medal behind the German Democratic Republic in the medley relay. Although she never won a medal at either the World or European Championships she was successful at the 1982 Commonwealth Games, winning three gold medals, a silver and a bronze. The absence of many of the Eastern Bloc countries at the Los Angeles Games of 1984 gave Croft an opportunity to collect another medal, a bronze, in the 400 freestyle and she also reached the final of another four events. A final Olympics in Seoul was less successful and she retired after winning relay medals at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.
