Biography

Julianne McNamara was considered the top US female gymnast in the early 1980s. She was US all-around champion in 1980, and then placed seventh in all-around at the 1981 World Championships, at the time the highest finish ever for a US woman. She also earned a bronze medal on the uneven bars at the 1981 Worlds. McNamara placed eighth at the 1982 World Cup in all-around and was 16th at the 1983 World Championships. She helped the US team to a silver medal at the 1984 Olympics, and won a gold medal on uneven bars, a silver on the floor, and placed fourth in all-around. McNamara retired from gymnastics officially in 1987, and began an acting career, appearing on several television series. She married major league baseball player Todd Zeile although they later divorced. McNamara is a member of the US Gymnastics Hall of Fame. In 1982 The Flower Council of Holland named a flower in her honor, the Julianne McNamara rose.
