Skier Josef Gumpold finished 13th in the Nordic combined at the 1936 Garmisch Partenkirchen Winter Olympics. He lived in Austria as a youth but moved to Bavaria in 1935 and he took German citizenship. Four years earlier he was one the actors in the film Das weiße Rauschen (The White Ecstasy) directed by Leni Riefenstahl. In 1942, he was killed-in-action at the Eastern front during World War II. He was buried at Salzburg in the Böckstein soldiers’ cemetery.
