John Halstead won the IC4A mile for Cornell in 1908. Halstead also won the Eastern Olympic Trials 1,500 metres in 1908, and as both events were qualifiers for the 1908 US Olympic team, he actually won two Olympic Trials in the same event. Halstead graduated from Cornell in 1908. He served in the artillery for the US Army during World War I. He then made his living as a construction engineer. Halstead later designed the first lightweight motor truck, and helped designed the Penn Railroad Terminal in New York.
