Biography

Running for Penn State, John Romig was the inaugural NCAA champion over 2 miles in 1921. He also won the AAU indoors 2-mile in 1922. Outdoors he later moved up in distance and finished second in the 1928 AAU 10K. He also competed for the Meadowbrook Club.

After his track career ended, Romig started teaching and coaching at Kennett Square Consolidated High School in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. He later turned to working with explosives, and became known as an expert on that topic. Romig was the manager of Quarry Mining Industries, and then an executive with Atlas Chemical (later AstraZeneca), and then Atlas Powder Company in Wilmington, Delaware.

Personal Best: 5K – 15:12.4 (1924).
