John Jellico was oldest of 10 children born to an Irish family of corn merchants and millers. His father later became a broker for the Limerick Steamship Company and they moved to Ireland. John Jellico became a yacht broker, though he did serve during World War I as a lieutenant with the RNVR [Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve]. He died in August 1925 in Liverpool and is buried in the graveyard at Sefton Parish Church, near Liverpool, England.
