Biography

The Princetonian John Cregan won the AAU 880y in 1897, the one mile in 1897 and 1898, and at the IC4A he won the 880y in 1898 and the mile for three successive years (1898-1900). This record clearly indicates Cregan’s quality as a miler, but he withdrew from the 1,500m in the 1900 Olympics because the event was staged on a Sunday. When the U.S. team stopped over in London on their way to Paris, John Cregan took second place to Alfred Tysoe at the British AAA Championships. It was Tysoe who again beat him in the Olympic final.

Personal Bests: 800 – 1:55.3 (1897); Mile – 4:24.4 (1900).
