Biography

Germany’s Johannes Vetter, despite never having won an Olympic medal to date, is still considered among the world’s elite javelin throwers.

Born in Dresden on March 26, 1993, Johannes Vetter is a former world and Diamond League champion. But perhaps his biggest recognition in the sport is as the man who came the closest to breaking Jan Zelezny’s world record, a mark which has barely been threatened for almost three decades.

Introduced to athletics at a young age, Vetter took up javelin throw at the age of 13. However, it wasn’t until 2014 that he truly started to establish himself as a force in the sport.

Towards the end of the year, Vetter opted to move to Offenburg, almost 600km from his hometown in Dresden, to train under coach Boris Obergföll. The decision changed the trajectory of Vetter’s career.

To put it into perspective, Vetter had logged over 80m in only one competition between 2009 and 2014. In 2015, he threw over 80m in 10 of the 18 events he competed in. The German thrower finished fourth at the European U23 Championships that year and was seventh at the IAAF World Championships.
