Tommy Evans competed at two Olympics and was one of the first Americans to compete at the Olympics in both wrestling styles. His greatest success came in freestyle. While a student at Oklahoma he won the 1952 and 1954 NCAA Championships at 145 lbs., adding the 1954 AAU title at that weight. After graduation he won the gold medal at the 1955 Pan American Games (freestyle lightweight -67 kg) and added two more AAU titles to his trophy case. He became the head wrestling coach at the University of Oklahoma, but left that profession to later become a commercial pilot.
