János Halász started playing basketball and football in Szeged, playing the two sports simultaneously, both at an above-average level. He started playing basketball at Szegedi TK, playing football with SZAK and later with Szegedi Honvéd, where he even played in the Hungarian first division in 1946. From 1947 on, Halász played basketball for Szegedi Honvéd, then joined Budapesti Lokomotiv in 1954-56, and then until 1962 was with Szegedi EAC. He played internationally for the Hungarian national team 54 times, and as the highlight of his sports career, Halász participated in the 1948 London Olympics, the first Olympics in which Hungary competed in basketball. After his sports career, Halász worked as an electrician and then as a medical technician.
