Biography

Janne Lahtela was one of the most prominent moguls skiers at the turn of the 21st century. He was the 2002 Winter Olympic moguls champion while taking silver in 1998. He also won the World moguls title in 1999, while taking the dual moguls silver at the same competition. He won 23 World Cup events during his career and was the overall moguls World Cup winner in the 1998-99, 1999-2000 and 2003-04 seasons and overall dual moguls World Cup winner in the 1999-2000 and 2002-03 seasons. Domestically, Lahtela won five Finnish titles – 1992, 1994, 1997 and 2000 in moguls and in 2000 in dual moguls. He finished his career after the 2006 Winter Olympics and later worked as a head coach of the Japanese national freestyle skiing team. His cousin Sami Mustonen was also a world class moguls skier, winning bronze at the 1998 Olympics and silver at the 2005 and bronze at the 1999 World Championships.
