Biography

James Beale won the 1906 North of the Thames Association’s cross-country championship at Wembley Park and was third in the Southern Counties Championship at Thames Ditton. He took part in that years International Cross-Country Championship in Wales but did not finish. He was also runner-up to Albert Aldridge in that year's AAA 10 miles at Stamford Bridge. In March 1908 Beale finished well down the field in the International Cross-Country, but the following month was the runner-up to Alex Duncan in the AAA 10 miles. He placed second to Duncan in the Polytechnic Olympic marathon trial from Windsor Park to Wembley Park (22.5 miles) in 1908. Despite not winning or faring well in any major road races or cross-country events after 1908, Beale was selected for his second Olympic Marathon in 1912.
