Biography

Hjalmar Andersson finished second behind Hannes Kolehmainen in the cross-country race at the 1912 Olympics and as his compatriots John Eke and Josef Ternström finished third and fifth, respectively, the Swedish team beat Finland by the smallest margin possible to win the team gold medal. Andersson was Swedish cross-country champion from 1918-20. Andersson finished his sporting career in 1920, when he moved to work in Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago, situated in the Arctic, about midway between continental Norway and the North Pole.
