Hermann Magerl placed an unfortunate fourth in the high jump at the 1972 home Olympics in München, but this was his best international result. He also placed sixth at the 1970 European Cup, and 12th at the 1971 European Championships. In 1969 he was nominated for the 1969 European Championships but due to the West German boycott could not start. When former GDR-runner Jürgen May was nominated to these Championships for the West German team, GDR officials protested, which led to the West German boycott. Domestically Magerl won West German titles in 1970 and 1972. He studied medicine and eventually became a doctor of general medicine, homeopathy, chiropractic and sports medicine in his hometown of Obertraubling, but in 2009 moved his medical practice to Regensburg.
Personal Best: HJ – 2.24 (1972).
