Biography

Helga Schmidt was a West German backstroke swimmer who participated in three consecutive Olympic Games from 1956-64, representing the mixed German team. She finished fourth in the 100 backstroke in 1956, and was eliminated in the heats in both 1960 and 1964, when she competed under her married name Neuber. Between 1952 and 1961 she won 27 West German titles, set 25 German backstroke records, and appeared in 31 international matches.

Between 1957-61 Neuber was an artist in Bremen, and after that earned her living as an applied artist and water-color painter. She also worked with glass and ceramics and applied herself to photographic art.
