Biography

Holly Metcalf graduated in 1981 from Mount Holyoke College and later obtained a masters’ degree in risk management from Harvard. She competed for the US at the World Championships from 1981-86, winning three silvers and one bronze medal. Metcalf rowed coxed fours at the 1981-82 Worlds, winning bronze in 1981 and silver in 1982. She was in the eight in 1983 and 1986-87, winning silvers in 1983 and 1987.

Metcalf became a rowing coach, coaching the US women at the 1990 World Championships. In 1994, she founded the Row As One Institute, which provided masters women with top-level coaching. She extended this concept to inner-city girls in 1996 with her G-ROW program in Watertown, Massachusetts. In 2002 Metcalf established WeCanRow, a wellness and rehabilitation organization for female cancer survivors, which later evolved into WeCanRow National. In 2007 Metcalf took over as head coach at MIT for the openweight women. She is a member of the New England Women’s Sports Hall of Fame and the Maine Hall of Fame.
