Rower Hans-Ulrich Buchholz was a member of the West German eights at the 1972 München Olympics that finished a disappointing fifth. At the European Championships the previous year, the crew finished sixth. Buchholz never won a West German national title.
Buchholz was born in a makeshift hospital in East Prussia after his mother fled to the West to escape from Russians at the end of World War II. In 2011, he died of a heart attack, during a sailing trip off the Croatian coast.
