Javelin thrower Hans Schenk came in 12th at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. He also finished seventh at the 1958 Europeans. Domestically he never won a West German title. His daughter Anette became a middle- and long-distance runner.
Schenk became better known as the West German national javelin coach, numbering among his pupils Klaus Wolfermann and Klaus Tafelmeier. After fleeing from East Prussia in 1945, together with his mother and five siblings, he settled in Leverkusen. He was trained as a business clerk but took a job as a lecturer at the Sports High School in Köln (Cologne) and coach at his home club of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Schenk was also a long-time fitness and conditioning coach for the football (soccer) club 1. FC Köln.
