Biography

Gertrud Schmidt placed seventh at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in the 400. She also participated in the 1965 European Cup (third) and the 1969 European Championships (eliminated in the heats). She won East German titles in the 400 in 1963-65, the 400 indoor in 1965, and demonstrating an unusual range, winning a cross-country title in 1966. Schmidt set two world records with the 4x800 relay in 1969 and in the 800 indoor in 1965. She trained as a sports teacher and later worked as a coach, and in 1972 married athletics coach Klaus Lohse.

Personal Best: 400 – 53.8 (1965).
