Biography

Setter Galina Leontyeva (until 1967 Yelnitskaya) started to play volleyball with Trudovyye Rezervy Leningrad in 1959 and from 1962-78 played with Spartak Leningrad. With Spartak, Leontyeva won silvers at the Soviet championships in 1963 and 1971 and the Soviet Cups in 1976 and 1977. Leontyeva was on the Soviet national team from 1967-72 and won Olympic golds in 1968 and 1972, a World title in 1970, and European titles in 1967 and 1971, also winning Universiade gold in 1965. After finishing her sporting career, Leontyeva worked as a volleyball coach with Pervoy Pyatiletki Leningrad from 1979-92. In 1994, Leontyeva was one of the organizers of the Goodwill Games volleyball tournament held in her hometown of St. Petersburg.
