Biography

Gabriele Hinzmann was an East German discus thrower who won the bronze medal at the 1976 Montréal Olympic Games, while four years earlier in München she had placed sixth. Her husband was non-Olympian javelin thrower Siegfried Hinzmann. In 1974 she earned another bronze medal at the European Championships, placing seventh in 1969, and was runner-up at the 1975 European Cup. Hinzmann won four East German titles in 1969 and 1972-74, and in 1973 became the first German over the 65 metre barrier. Hinzmann was educated as a school teacher.
