Biography

Before Ernst Krebs turned to flatwater canoeing he enjoyed a career as a cross-country skier. Between 1928 and 1932 he won four German titles with the Bavarian 4x10 km relay at the Nordic Championships. At the 1929 Nordic World Championships he came eighth over 18 km. In 1933 he won the European flatwater canoeing title in the K-1 over 10 km. Three years later he qualified for the Berlin Olympic Games after winning the German title. At the 1936 Games, Krebs became an Olympic Champion by winning the 10 km K-1. Krebs was also a mountaineer and often climbed with Toni Schmid in the Alps. In 1970 the trained tinsmith was killed in a house accident when he fell down a ladder while trying to mount a gutter on a third floor.
