West German backstroke swimmer Ekkehard Miersch was the son of modern pentathlete Konrad Miersch. Ekkehard was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 100 backstroke at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. From 1956-58 he won three consecutive West German titles. Miersch later graduated as a physician, but still competed in several Senior Masters events, including the 1997 Europeans in Praha. He was also a keen promoter of swimming in his hometown Sindelfingen.
