When Eirik Kvalfoss was 12 years old, he arrived for a cross-country skiing event and discovered that he was not entered. He signed up for an open biathlon race instead, won the race and switched sports. Kvalfoss' first race at the 1984 Winter Games was the 20km. He recorded the fastest time, but missed five targets and placed third. Three days later, in the 10 kilometres, he missed two targets, but held on to win by 8½ seconds anyway. A member of Norway's 4x7.5-km relay team, Kvalfoss placed second and left Sarajevo with a complete set of medals.
