Biography

Flyweight boxer Edgar Basel from Mannheim was a surprise silver medalist at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games. He outpointed the favored Anatoly Bulakov in the semi-finals, but lost the final to American Nate Brooks. Four years later in Melbourne, Basel was beaten on points in his first bout by the Soviet Vladimir Stolnikov. Basel was the German amateur champion four times in 1951-52 and 1954–56, and was the European Champion in 1955.

In 1952 Basel was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf. In 1957 he turned professional, but had only limited success, and retired four years later. By profession, he was a commercial clerk.
