Biography

Don Anthony competed for England at the 1954 and 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, placing fourth in 1954 and fifth in 1958 in the hammer throw. He won the AAA hammer title in 1953 and was a three-time Inter-Counties champion, 1954-56. Anthony later worked in education and became an AAA senior coach, frequently writing about hammer throwing. He was a founding member of the Hammer Circle, but is best known in sports administration, as the founder of the Amateur Volleyball Association, representing the sport on the British Olympic Association for 32 years. He later became Honoray Life President of the AVA. Anthony also became a well-known academic, writer, and researcher of the Olympic Movement.
