Biography

Donald Alexander GOSS

Sandy Goss took up swimming as an eight-year-old and set a world record in the 200 metres breaststroke at the age of 17. He joined the Canadian national team in 1983 and was selected to represent his country at the 1984 Summer Olympics, where he won silver in the 4x100 metre medley relay (alongside Victor Davis, Tom Ponting, and Mike West). He also placed fifth in the 4x200 metre freestyle relay (with Alex Baumann, Benoit Clément, Wayne Kelly, and Peter Szmidt) and seventh in both the 100 metres backstroke and the 4x100 metre freestyle relay (alongside Baumann, Dave Churchill, Blair Hicken, and Levente Mady). His next stop was the 1985 Pan Pacific Championships, where he won bronze in the 200 m freestyle and silver in the 4x200 m freestyle relay. He then won four medals at the 1986 Commonwealth Games: gold in the 200 m backstroke and the 4x100 m medley relay (with the assistance of Baumann, Davis, Ponting, West, Mark Tewksbury, and the non-Olympians Claude Lamy and Darcy Wallingford) and silver in the 4x100 and 4x200 m freestyle relays (alongside Baumann, Hicken, and Vlastimil Cerny and Ponting and the non-Olympians Scott Flowers and Paul Szekula respectively).

Goss was recruited by the University of Florida in 1987 and competed for them through 1991, earning 24 All-American swimming honors and a marketing degree. He also attended the 1988 Summer Olympics, where he again won silver in the 4x100 m medley relay, this time with Davis, Ponting and Tewksbury. He also placed eighth in the 4x200 m freestyle relay (alongside Donald Haddow, Turlough O'Hare, Gary Vandermeulen, and Darren Ward), ninth in the 4x100 m freestyle relay (with Cerny, Mark Andrews, and Stephen Vandermeulen), and tenth in the 100 m freestyle. After retiring from active competition, Goss worked as a stock broker and investment advisor and was inducted into the Ontario Aquatic Hall of Fame in 1996.
