Biography

East German backstroke swimmer Dieter Pfeifer from Chemnitz failed to reach the final of the 100 metres at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He competed again at Tokyo in 1964, this time in the 400 metres individual medley, but was eliminated in the heats. He was East German 100 metres backstroke champion in 1956-57, was runner-up in 1958-59, and third in 1960-61. He also finished third in the 200 backstroke in 1961 and 1962 and then, after concentrating on the 400 individual medley, won the national title in 1963, was second in 1964 and third in 1966. In 1965, with his home club SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz), he won the non-Olympic 4x200 backstroke relay title.
