Conor McDavid has always been ahead of his peers. The Toronto native's parents lied about his age when he was was three, as participants needed to be five to play hockey. By the age of six, he was playing against nine-year-olds in Aurora, Ontario.
After experiencing plenty of success, he was granted 'Exceptional Player' status by Hockey Canada, which allowed him to play at the major junior level one year early. A Toronto Maple Leafs fan growing up, the dazzlingly quick and creative centre was attracting plenty of attention and in 2015 he was picked first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL Draft aged 19.
Despite missing 37 games of his rookie campaign due to a fractured clavicle, he scored an impressive 48 points (16 goals, 32 assists) in 45 games. It was enough to see him named the Oilers captain aged 19 years and 266 days old, becoming the youngest man to be named team captain in NHL history.
With leadership responsibilities added, McDavid took his game to another level in 2016-17, leading the league with 100 points (30 goals, and 70 assists). He has since transformed the Oilers into a regular contender for the Stanley Cup, coming closest in 2024 when the Oilers lost the Stanley Cup Finals in seven games.
