Biography

Bud Pinkston’s record of winning four Olympic diving medals was an American best, until equalled by Mickey Riley (Galitzen) and later bettered by Greg Louganis. Pinkston won the AAU outdoor for five straight years from 1920 and won two AAU springboard titlesone indoors and one outdoors. Pinkston was from the great school of divers who were coached by Ernst Brandsten at Stanford; at the 1924 Olympics, Stanford divers made a sweep of the medals in both the springboard and the platform. Pinkston married Betty Becker, the 1924 Olympic platform champion, and coached her to her second gold medal in 1928. After retiring from competition he became a coach and athletic director for the Detroit AC.
