Charles Axtell was one of the greats in the early days of competitive shooting in this country He was also active as an administrator in the sport, being one of the founders of the U.S. Revolver Association and serving as its president from 1911 until 1913. Besides his team Olympic gold medal, Axtell competed individually in free pistol, just missing the medals with a fourth-place finish. Axtell also competed at some shooting events in 1900 connected with the Paris Exposition. Which events were and were not on the Olympic program in that year is not known, so it is possible that Axtell also competed in the 1900 Olympics.
