Biography

Charles Keating, III swam for Indiana University, graduating in 1977. His father, Charles Keating, Jr., was a swimmer at the University of Cincinnati in the 1940s. CK3 was a breaststroker who placed third at the AAU meet in the 200 breast in 1974 and fourth in 1976. He made the 1976 Olympic team by placing third at the US Olympic Trials. He later became a real estate developer in the Phoenix area in the 1980s. His extended family is swimming royalty, as CK3 is the brother-in-law of Gary Hall, Sr. and the uncle of 10-time Olympic medalist, Gary Hall, Jr.. The father, Charles Keating, Jr., became well-known in the 1980s when he was involved in a major savings and loan scandal, for which he was convicted and served 4 years in prison, although the conviction was eventually overturned. The Olympian's son, Charles Keating, IV, was a cross-country runner at Indiana University, who left school after 3 years to become a US Navy SEAL. Keating served as a US Navy SEAL until he was killed in combat with ISIS in Iraq in April 2016.
