Biography

Charlene Wittstock swam for South Africa at the 2000 Olympics, 2002 Short Course World Championships, where she placed sixth in the 200 m backstroke, and at the 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games. A shoulder injury shortened her career and although she tried to return for the 2008 Olympics, she did not qualify. At a swimming competition in Monaco in 2000 Wittstock met Prince Albert II, and they later began a romantic relationship. In June 2010 Wittstock and Prince Albert II became engaged, and were married in Monaco on 1-2 July 2011 (civil and religious ceremony). At that time Wittstock became Her Serene Highness, The Princess of Monaco.
